Why Ghisallo?
Passo del Ghisallo a 10km climb in Lombardy, Italy, that is unusually steep for a continental climb. It has featured in il Lombardia classic since 1919 and is synonymous with the race. At its summit, sits a chapel dedicated to cycling, a museum and a monument to Madonna del Ghisallo, the patron saint of cyclists. It's a magical place that I'd encourage you to visit.
My fitting practice.........
It's simply about achieving comfort and efficiency when enjoying your cycling the way that you do. The aim of the fit is to achieve 'the bike disappearing underneath you’.
My focus is on reducing the work your body has to do to maintain its posture, which frees up muscles to pedal more efficiently and seeks to remove the aches and pains that accumulate as the miles rack up.
I am a bike fitter educated to International Bike Fitting Institute standards, being student of the renowned Tony Corke at Torke Cycling. This training builds on the solid foundation of knowledge that forty-two years of cycling experience brings. I am primarily focussed on helping cyclists find comfort and efficiency in their cycling through bike fitting and process-technique guidance. I give considered, confidential advice based on my client’s personal circumstances, aspirations and where they are in their cycling journey.
I am proud to be an ex Yorkshire Best All Rounder, multiple top ten nationally ranked time trial rider and CTT National silver medalist (with plenty of disappointments and mediocre performances too!). Despite being in my late fifties, to my wife's despair, I still race cyclocross, time trials and occasionally, mountain bikes. In my spare time, I am a long serving, international cycling official who practices across the core disciplines of road, cyclocross, track and MTB. My work gives me a rounded insight to the very highest levels of the sport and some of the latest best practice and innovation employed by world class teams and athletes.
I get particular pleasure from helping those who are new to cycling as a pastime in a wholistic way, bringing together my wide range of soft skills, qualifications and experience.
I am a stockist for bike fit relevant contact points such as cleats, saddles, handlebars and stems. I am not aligned to any cycle shop or bike manufacturer. Consequently, I am able to offer my advice without any commercial influence whatsoever. This is particularly important when supporting my clients with pre purchase sizing fits. I am a Shimano Tec trained practitioner for bike fit relevant modifications.
I offer my services from the perspective of a middle aged, lifelong cyclist. I’m a veteran of forty-two wet springs, mediocre summers, even wetter autumns and increasingly wet winters. I've managed quite a few injuries along the way, including separated shoulders, a complicated broken leg and chronic saddle sores (caused by not having a bike fit!). I take my bike just about everywhere with me and enjoy rolling along chatting whilst bike packing on gravel trails in Scotland just as much as I do racing a ten mile time trial at close to my maximum heart rate.
I deliver my fits in a friendly, personal way that is based on rider feedback from the structured, comparative TORKE methodology rather than a computer generated dataset that works from averages; and averages of averages. My fits take as long as they take, are bespoke to the individual and the way they use their machine. 'Road Cycling' isn't nearly good enough information for me to fit my clients. Do they ride five days a week for an hour or so and do a four hour, fast group ride on a weekend?.....but they're also training to do the Etape du Tour next summer despite having a niggling injury? No proprietary fit program can assimilate this information into a fit that prioritises what's important to my client. No computer driven system can chat to you and pick up the non verbal communication that is very much part of the fit process. All you will end up with is a 'one size fits most' fit that isn't for bespoke for you. I use motion capture technology as part of my fitting process, but it forms part of the process rather than being driven by it.
That's why I will only ever take one booking per day. Bring a packed lunch! I'll make the coffee......
I understand that cycling is an expensive sport. I am always mindful of the phrase "The easiest thing to do is to spend other people's money". This notion is forefront in my mind when working with clients. With my bike fitting, many of my fits are delivered on the agreed basis of 'not letting perfection stand in the way of better'. This is because I understand that for many cyclists, a simple change like crank length will often become relevant to every machine a person owns.
Cycling has given me a lifetime of pleasure. I have worked as an official at all three Grand Tours, travelled extensively with the sport. I have met some incredible people along the way. Four decades on, the sport still gives me immense personal satisfaction. I see my work in bike fitting, helping people enjoy their pastime, as a way of repaying my debt to cycling.
